Geography
El Salvador is indeed small in size ( 8124 Sq. miles, slightly smaller than Massachusetts, similar to Israel. )
but it still has great diversity in terms of geography and climate. Most of the country is a 4000-foot plateau that is located in the north, and slopes down to the south to the narrow costal plains. El Salvador is located right on the edge of the Pacific Plate and the Caribbean Plate, because of that, volcanic activities and earthquakes are frequent.
El Salvador has roughly 150 major rivers, but only the Lempa River is navigable and it is only about 240 miles long. El Salvador used to be completely covered with rain forest. In colonial times people cleared most of the rain forest for sugar came and coffee plantations. Today, only 6% of the rain forest remains. Most of the wildlife disappeared with the rain forests, and only rodents, bats, reptiles and insects are left.
